Wei Jie embarked on his legal career as a practice trainee at Singapore’s largest community law firm where he trained in the area of personal injury and negligence litigation. After he was called to the Singapore Bar in August 2021, he joined a boutique firm as an associate in the firm’s civil litigation practice before joining one of the “Big Four” firms in Singapore as an associate in their commercial and corporate disputes practice group.
Wei Jie’s practice encompasses a diverse range of contentious and non-contentious matters, including civil and commercial disputes, employment law, insolvency law, family and probate matters, and criminal law. He has represented companies, organizations, and individuals in disputes with differing complexities and nature, ranging from contractual disputes and disputes over breaches of fiduciary duties, directors’ duties, and duty of care, to property, trust and matrimonial disputes. Wei Jie’s legal experience has honed his litigation and advocacy skills, instilling in him the confidence to assist his clients in navigating the treacherous waters of litigation and to effectively advocate for his clients’ best interests. He also leverages on his experience in different types of civil disputes to assist his clients in identifying their legal issues from a holistic perspective and offer them comprehensive and thorough legal advice.
Apart from litigation and dispute resolution, Wei Jie also has experience in corporate transactional matters such as private mergers & acquisitions transactions and has advised clients on a wide range of corporate governance, compliance, employment and securities-related matters.
Being client-oriented and able to provide bespoke, pragmatic and cost-effective solutions have always been the lodestars for Wei Jie throughout his career, and this is reflected in the way Wei Jie approaches his clients and their legal issues. Wei Jie treats his clients’ legal problems as his own and firmly believes in not only going above and beyond in helping his clients but in walking together with them as partners throughout their entire journey towards a resolution of their legal problems, providing support and guidance every step of the way.
Outside of work, Wei Jie is a staunch proponent of volunteer work and giving back to the community. He has participated in numerous Flag Days and food rationing events to distribute food to the needy and has also helped organize year-end Christmas and New Year parties for the elderly and the aged sick at community centres or nursing homes. He also volunteers at Pro Bono SG and has participated at legal clinics organized by the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations. Besides volunteering, Wei Jie is also an ailurophile who relishes taking care of stray cats and attending seminars on feline behaviour and psychology.
Sample Cases
Acted for a former CEO of a large health technology company in Singapore which provides third-party administrative and healthcare services in a claim commenced by the group’s founder against him for alleged misrepresentation, breach of condition subsequent and implied terms, breach of Quistclose trust, unjust enrichment, and damages in the sum of SGD 4,124,484.54.
Acted for the respondents, including a major premier education group in Asia Pacific listed on the Mainboard of the Singapore Stock Exchange, in an appeal to the Appellate Division of the High Court by the appellant against the High Court’s finding of inducement of breach of contract by the appellant and the High Court’s quantification of damages to be paid by the appellant to the respondents.
Acted for a party who was one of two defendants in a claim against her late father’s estate for a sum of SGD 387,047.27, being the plaintiff’s alleged investment in a joint venture between him and the defendant’s late father for the sale and purchase of used cars which the defendant’s late father allegedly promised to return to the plaintiff upon termination of the said joint venture.
Acted for a large home theatre systems provider in Singapore who was the defendant in a claim commenced against them by the plaintiff, the sole proprietor of a wholesaler of audio and video equipment, for a sum of SGD 208,663.43 for breach of contract as the defendant had failed to pay for the audio and video equipment it had allegedly purchased from the plaintiff’s company.
Acted for a Bermudian corporate trustee of a multi-generational trust in a claim against a major foreign bank with a branch in Singapore for damages arising from the bank’s alleged breach of its contractual duties and common law duty of care towards its customers in failing to carry out the trustee’s instructions to invest in USD $15 million worth of Exchange Traded Funds.
Acted for a well-known aesthetics doctor and founder of a chain of medical clinics in Singapore specializing in laser skincare treatments, in defending committal proceedings commenced by the plaintiff against him for allegedly lying to the court that he was unable to recall what had become of monies paid to him by the plaintiff pursuant to a private equity investment.
Acted for the president of a prominent Buddhist association in Singapore in a claim by the plaintiff against the association before the High Court for a declaration that they held a plot of land at Tai Seng Avenue, Singapore, on constructive trust for the plaintiff.
Acted for a plaintiff in his claim against the defendant for negligence, breach of fiduciary duties and unjust enrichment in failing to remit monies belonging to the plaintiff out of the People’s Republic of China and to the plaintiff’s bank account in Singapore in breach of parties’ agreement that the defendant would provide such remittance services in return for commission from the Plaintiff.
Acted for a party in obtaining a stay of the proceedings commenced against her in the POHA Court on the basis that parties had earlier entered into a settlement agreement which extinguished the claims against her in the POHA Court.
Acted for a group of plaintiffs in their claims against several defendants for an alleged conspiracy to defraud investors, including the plaintiffs, through a fraudulent investment scheme which purported to raise capital for a cutting-edge soil-stabilization technology and project in Malaysia.
Acted for a mother who was the appellant in an appeal to the Family Division of the High Court of Singapore over the Family Justice Court’s decision to grant care and control and access to her one-year-old daughter to her husband.
